The temple is on top of a coral hill, about 97 meters above sea level. This makes the beautiful sea scenery below the temple visible – even the sunset can be seen from this temple. A small forest can also be seen near the temple and is inhabited by hundreds of monkeys. The Balinese people believe that the monkeys are the ones that guard the temple area. Around the temple, you can find some restaurants and souvenirs shops.
Kecak Dance, Local Performance in Pura Luhur Uluwatu
Here, you can see the Tari Kecak or Kecak Dance show – a traditional dance with the theme of the love and life story of Rama and Sita. This dance is performed by more than 40 youths.
The performance will perform unconsciously, as they try to communicate with God through the spirits of the ancestors and then convey their hopes to the local community, give good news, or give warnings to the community. The youths will make the sound ‘Cak’ with their voices during the performance.
How to watch the Performance?
To watch the Kecak Dance Show, you first have to go to Uluwatu Temple, then you will have to buy a ticket for Rp.150.000,00 or $9.61 (adults) and Rp.75.000,00 or $4.8 (children from 2 – 9 years old). The best row to watch the Kecak Dance Show is on the third row from below since the ‘Hanoman’ can come and tease you.
The show will be held every day from 6 pm – 7 pm. You are only allowed to take pictures or videos of the performance. Uluwatu Temple is a sacred and holy place, so remember to wear proper clothes to maintain decency. For women, you can’t enter the temple if you are on your period.
